About New Garden

New Garden International Preschool is a Swedish and English speaking Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool. We view children as competent and significant members of our society. We recognize their strong inner drive to collectively explore the world, play, and learn based on their own conditions and interests. Despite being a small preschool, we hold a deep belief in the competence of children. Here, every child has the opportunity to joyfully develop into confident, independent, and curious individuals. Our preschool is infused with democratic contexts, a hundred languages and ways of expression, and a commitment to a sustainable present and future – all guided by language-developing approaches.

At New Garden International preschool, we strive to be a welcoming space where children's voices are heard, acknowledged, valued, and respected. Every child has the chance to flourish and develop in meaningful contexts at our preschool.

New Garden International preschool consists of three departments, and accomodates 40 children aged 1-6. They are supported by trained childcare professionals and preschool teachers, all passionate about their profession.

The hundred languages of children

With this perspective, the children are provided with the conditions to investigate and understand their surroundings through rhizomatic processes where different disciplines are woven together, creating a whole. It is a context where thought and action unite, enriching the dimensions of experience. Aesthetic expressions are given a lot of time and space in our education, and all teaching is characterized by transdisciplinary processes. Our children are given the opportunity to discover and explore various linguistic expressions by being offered rich and varied materials and methods. Through multilingualism, they deepen their understanding of different areas of knowledge and their own learning processes. It is when multiple senses are involved in our processes and in our education that new knowledge can thrive and be solidified. It is about giving children the opportunity to embrace their skills through a hundred ways of thinking, a hundred ways of expressing themselves, and a hundred ways of understanding.

A Sustainable Future

We play a central role in cultivating our children's positive outlook on the future and contributing to the creation of a world where care for each other and our planet is at the core. Together, we strive to instill commitment and an optimistic view of life while early enabling a growing responsibility for sustainable development based on the global goals of Agenda 2030. Sustainable development is characterized by three essential dimensions: the economic dimension, the social dimenson, and the ecological dimension. By promoting forward-thinking, creativity, and kindness, we become a resource to support a holistic view of sustainability and preserve and develop our ecological sensitivity. We work to establish an understanding of the significant impact that humans, nature, and society have on each other, and how we are interconnected as part of the complex system that constitutes life on Earth. We also work on re-creating, recycling, reusing, repurposing, and seeing opportunities as well as richness in materials. We work empathetically, listen attentively, and consciously promote favorable social interaction while developing tools for sustainable relationships together with the children. We show care for our materials and environments, involving children in the important processes of organizing, repairing, renegotiating, and taking care of our resources.

Democracy

Our education and teaching are characterized by a positive sustainable democratic present and future. This places significant demands on our ability to actively empower children, to let the preschool (and the world) become the children's arena, and for us working here to be their advocates. We believe in their abilities, we know they can, and we know they are important members of society - here and now. Through our teaching and education, through our processes and enactments, and through the environment that children encounter physically, mentally, and socially, they are given a real opportunity to influence and change the world they and we live in. The expression of the children is valued at all levels, and our goal is that their creativity and intelligence constantly sprout, flourish, and develop. Our projects are characterized by boundless listening, multilingualism, rich rhizomatic learning processes, and identity- and relationship-strengthening contexts with a focus on children's self-esteem, agency, and togetherness. Together, we work to create an understanding of the reciprocity, sensitivity, and solidarity required in a democratic society. We actively work on power equalization, co-researching, and participating in all relationships. In this way, we can enable and make visible the voices of children, as well as create real spaces for their vital impact on and imprint on education, the city, and the world - both now and in the future.

Language-developing Approaches

Every child has the right to a language – a tool for communicating their thoughts and ideas – and to develop their unique ability to express their emotions in various ways. The language-developing approach is, therefore, the heart of our entire practice and a constant focus. Linguistic stimuli in the environment, imaginative activities, and interaction among all participants play a crucial part in each child's communication and language development. Our languaging environments are constantly evolving and filled with relevant content that supports all forms of linguistic stimulation in both Swedish, mother tongue, and other forms of expression. Books are a constant source of new concepts and expressions, and we continuously and deliberately utilize the world of books in education and teaching. We play with words, explore poetry, sing songs, rhyme, and incorporate mother tongue as a natural part of children's education from an intercultural perspective. We work language-supportively using signs as support, digital tools, images, and other forms of clarification and concretization methods. Speaking is the core of society – children should immerse themselves in language on a daily basis.
